Within Shipibo curanderismo and related Amazonian traditions, a plant teacher is understood to be a plant that carries its own spiritual intelligence — capable of actively teaching, guiding, and revealing insight to those who approach it with proper intention, preparation, and respect. Ayahuasca itself is regarded as a plant teacher within this framework.
Relationship with a plant teacher is cultivated over time, often through dietas — periods of disciplined, focused relationship with a specific plant under the guidance of a lineage holder — rather than through a single encounter. ECC's ceremonies are grounded in this understanding: the sacrament is approached as a spiritual teacher and guide, not a substance administered for a therapeutic or medical effect.
