A Silent Retreat is a retreat format in which participants observe periods of silence outside of ceremony — refraining from casual conversation, and often from phones and other outside distractions — as a spiritual discipline in its own right. Silence is used to quiet the mind, deepen inner listening, and hold the insight of ceremony without diluting it in constant talk.
The exact structure varies by retreat: some hold silence for the full retreat aside from ceremony and designated sharing times, while others weave silent periods around integration circles and other communal gatherings. In every form, the practice is meant to support participants in staying present to their own spiritual process.
