The "spirit of the plant" refers to the spiritual intelligence that the Shipibo curanderismo tradition and related Amazonian traditions understand to inhabit each plant teacher — an active, conscious presence rather than an inert organism. Facilitators describe their years-long relationship with plants such as the Banisteriopsis caapi vine, chacruna, and mapacho as a genuine relationship with this presence, built through dieta, prayer, and apprenticeship.
Within ceremony, the spirit of the plant is understood to guide, teach, and work directly with participants — offering insight, imagery, and guidance experienced during the ceremony itself. ECC's use of this language reflects the community's sincere religious understanding of plants as spiritual beings and teachers, not a metaphor for their chemical effects.
