Banisteriopsis caapi

The sacred vine that forms the foundation of the ayahuasca sacrament, revered in Amazonian tradition as the vine of the soul and the spiritual teacher of the brew.

Banisteriopsis caapi is a large woody vine native to the tropical rainforests of South America. In the vegetalismo tradition, it is considered the primary teacher plant of the ayahuasca sacrament — the element that opens the ceremonial space and governs the spiritual intelligence of the brew. The vine is spoken of not as an ingredient but as a living being with its own spiritual personality and power.

Indigenous plant specialists and lineage-trained facilitators spend years developing a relationship with B. caapi through the dieta practice: extended periods of fasting, isolation, prayer, and diet restrictions undertaken in proximity to the plant. Through this apprenticeship the plant teacher is said to reveal its songs, its medicine, and the protocols for working with it responsibly.

There are multiple recognized varieties of B. caapi, each with distinct spiritual characteristics honored by different Amazonian traditions. ECC's lineage works with the varieties that have been part of our teachers' practice, received and passed down through direct apprenticeship rather than commercial sourcing.
