Chacruna

The sacred admixture plant (Psychotria viridis) combined with the ayahuasca vine in the preparation of the sacrament, honored as a spirit ally that opens visionary perception.

Chacruna is the common name for Psychotria viridis, a leafy shrub from the coffee family that grows throughout the tropical lowlands of South America. In the preparation of the ayahuasca sacrament, chacruna leaves are combined with Banisteriopsis caapi vine in a process that traditional practitioners describe as the meeting of two complementary spiritual intelligences.

The name "chacruna" comes from the Quechua chaqruy, meaning "to mix." This etymology reflects the ceremonial understanding that the two plants are brought together in a sacred combination — neither alone constituting the sacrament, but together creating what the tradition recognizes as a complete spiritual medicine.

In vegetalismo tradition, chacruna is recognized as a spirit ally that facilitates the opening of inner perception — what the tradition describes as the ability to see clearly into the spiritual dimension. Facilitators working with the tradition speak of chacruna as a teacher in its own right, requiring the same respectful relationship through dieta and prayer that one maintains with the vine itself.
